BC Junior Canucks continue streak, 5-2 over Montreal Ice Storm
Coming off a big 1-0 double OT victory yesterday, the Montreal Ice Storm looked to build on their momentum as they faced off against the 3-0-0 B.C. Jr. Canucks.
Montreal got the party started quickly, scoring just 24 seconds into the hockey game. Overtime hero, Quinn Beauchesne, regained his scoring touch, burying an Xavier Lebel pass to put Montreal up 1-0.
B.C. was left scrambling as they took a Too Many Men penalty just two minutes later. Montreal’s Zachary Morin scored his first of the tournament on the ensuing powerplay. The unassisted goal gave Montreal a big 2-0 just 3:26 into the game.
The Canucks stormed back, creating chances of their own but couldn’t solve what Doyon-Catazquiz brought to the table. The Ice Storm netminder was making his 2nd appearance in the tournament.
Finally, Gavin McKenna had B.C.’s answer, sniping the Canucks’ first goal of the night at 11:39 of the first.
The second period started with a 2-2 score but it didn’t last long. Just 19 seconds in, Eliot Compton buried his third of the tournament (and first since the opening game against California). Cameron Schmidt and Gavin McKenna assisted Compton’s go-ahead goal.
The Jr. Canucks’ momentum kept building as Rafael Cloutier took a body checking minor. Adam Boatter made the Ice Storm pay as his wrister found the back of the net just over a minute into the man-advantage.
B.C carried their momentum into the third, but thanks to the brilliant effort of Montreal’s netminder Samuel Doyon-Cataquiz, the game stayed within two. He made some fantastic right pad saves and he slid post-to-post on consecutive shots.
The defending champions’ offense proved to be too potent for the Ice Storm D, as Cameron Schmidt and Gavin McKenna both scored unassisted beauties at the 8:15 and 12:20 marks of the period, respectively.
The Jr. Canucks have once again they can score whenever needed and looks destined to play strong throughout the tournament. Montreal should be proud of their efforts, coming out strong and creating great chances all game.
The final shots were 29-15 in favour of the Canucks. Canucks win, 4-2.
